times are tough and money tight, it's often our hobbies that goe first.
Fortunately when it comes to four wheeling, the hobby is a
lifestyle--and often a useful one. From hauling firewood, supplies, or
junk, to spending low-cost weekends out with the family, to helping a
friend move, used 4X4s aren't just vehicles--they can be family
workhorses.

So
which 4X4s make the best used 4X4 bargains? That depends on who you
ask, but in general, some used 4X4s seem to hold up better than others
on the used market. Based o our experiences owning, driving, testing,
and evaluating used 4X4s, we've picked our Top 5 used 4X4 bargains. And
here they are: Solid,
unique, very capable off road, and these days very cheap, the Isuzu
Trooper is one of the best used 4X4 bargains. With features like four
wheel disk brakes, limited slip differential, factory heavy duty skid
plates, tough suspension, and plenty of cargo space and ground
clearance, it is a go anywhere used 4X4 that can get you there and back.
Reliable,
long lived, and very respectable off road and on, the older Nissan
Pathfinder makes a great used 4X4 bargain. While not as capable off
road as some other 4X4s, they are nearly bulletproof, parts are cheap,
and they are plentiful around the world. They're also nice to drive on
road as well.
3. Ford Explorer Forget
the newer generations of Explorer, the original was essentially a
pickup-based SUV. While not very capable off road, the Explorer makes a
great all around family hauler. They are fairly tough, have lots of
interior space, and these days are almost dirt cheap as they tend to
gulp gas.
4. Toyota Pickup (Minitruck) While
the Toyota 4X4s are generally at the top of every 'best 4x4' list, one
thing brings them down on our list: used Toyota 4X4s are often
overpriced. While the Hilux-derived Toyota pickup and 4Runner are
legendarily capable and tough off road, they're still quite expensive
when in decent shape. Great used 4X4s to be sure, but pricey.
Fun
and capable off road, the little Suzuki makes a great trail companion
and daily driver. The engines are small I4 lumps that get great mileage
but won't haul much, and the Suzuki's have legendary reliability.
Arguable one of the most capable stock 4X4s, used Suzuki 4x4s are great
used bargains. Space might be tight, but they'll get you where you want
to go.

Used 4X4s: Bargain fun on the trail
Many used 4X4s hold their value and were built to last. While a
hard worked 4X4 might not be such a barain, plenty of used 4X4s were
bough to be driven primarily on paved roads. Find one of those, and you
could pick up a true used 4X4 bargain.
